Documenting the work of skilled artisans has always been a passion of mine. There’s something fascinating about watching someone create something beautiful and functional out of raw materials. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a carpenter named Rob, who specialises in crafting custom furniture and cabinetry. The images were taken for his promotion and to showcase how he works.
Rob’s workshop was filled with all sorts of tools and equipment, each with its own purpose in the creation process. The lighting was dim, but the warm glow of the sun coming through the window added a beautiful touch to the scene. I took a few minutes to observe Rob as he worked, and then began to take photos.
The first images I captured were documentary shots of Rob working on his latest project, a small table. I wanted to show the detail and precision that goes into each piece he creates. From measuring and cutting to sanding and finishing, each step was captured in detail. I used a mix of close-up and wider angle shots to give a sense of the scale of the workshop and the work being done.
After capturing some documentary images, it was time to take a portrait shot of Rob. I asked him to stand at the entrance to his workshop with a neutral expression on his face. The resulting image showed Rob’s calm and focused demeanour, which is an important aspect of his work as a carpenter.
Finally, I took a shot of the small table Rob had been working on during the shoot, outside his studio doors with the natural light coming from the sun. I positioned the table against a plain backdrop to showcase its beauty. The photo highlighted the attention to detail and craftsmanship that goes into each of Rob’s pieces.
Overall, it was a pleasure to document Rob’s work and showcase his skills. I hope these images help him in his promotion and showcase his talent to potential clients. It’s always inspiring to see someone who takes so much pride in their work, and Rob is no exception.
